If planets are the what and signs are the how, houses are the where. The twelve houses in a birth chart map different arenas of life experience. Planets located in a house activate that life area; the sign on each house cusp colors how you approach it.

The 12 houses at a glance

  • 1st House — Self, body, first impressions (Ascendant)
  • 2nd House — Money, possessions, self-worth
  • 3rd House — Communication, siblings, local travel
  • 4th House — Home, family, roots, private life (IC)
  • 5th House — Creativity, romance, children, pleasure
  • 6th House — Daily routine, health, work habits
  • 7th House — Partnerships, marriage, open enemies (Descendant)
  • 8th House — Shared resources, intimacy, transformation
  • 9th House — Higher education, travel, philosophy, belief
  • 10th House — Career, reputation, public life (Midheaven)
  • 11th House — Friends, community, hopes, networks
  • 12th House — Unconscious, solitude, spirituality, hidden matters

Angular, succedent, and cadent houses

Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are the most active — they drive major life themes. Succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) stabilize and consolidate. Cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) process, adapt, and prepare. Planets in angular houses tend to express loudly in a person's life story.

Whole sign vs Placidus houses

Different house systems divide the chart differently. Whole sign houses assign each sign to one house starting from the Ascendant — simple and traditional. Placidus, the most common Western system, uses unequal house sizes based on latitude. Stellune uses whole sign houses for clarity and consistency.

Empty houses

An empty house is not a dead zone. It simply means that life area is not a primary stage for planetary drama. Look to the ruling planet of that house's sign for more information about how that area operates in your chart.
